In the mid‑1980s, Ian Camfield and a small group of Founders set out to establish a country club in Stonington. Despite a challenging economic climate, delays caused by Hurricane Bob, and a lengthy two‑year approval process involving course designer Al Zikorus, the Stonington Country Club was officially incorporated on July 13, 1988. The first nine holes and a partially completed clubhouse opened in August 1992, made possible through the commitment and hard work of early members. The back nine opened in stages, with five holes completed in 1994 and the remaining four in October 1997, following enhancements by golf course architect Ron Forse. Member support played a crucial role in the Club’s development. All financing was provided by members through debentures, hole sponsorships, and other contributions, an important and distinctive part of the Club’s history. By 1999, the original clubhouse could no longer accommodate a growing membership. With the help of members, contractor Wes Maxwell, and architect Bill Roehl, an expansion was completed in June 2001. In 2019, the Club enclosed the original patio to create a 1,200‑square‑foot Pub Room featuring seating for more than 40 guests and a reconstructed oak bar overlooking the ninth green and first tee. In 2020, a 1,325‑square‑foot outdoor patio with seating, umbrellas, and a fire pit was added, allowing the Club to continue outdoor dining during the COVID‑19 pandemic. Also in 2020, the Club built a new 2,400‑square‑foot Golf Academy with six hitting stations and lower‑level bag storage. This project, supported by Club President Bob Evans, Jr. and other dedicated members, significantly expanded year‑round practice opportunities. The Club hired its first General Manager, Robin Rasch, LPGA, in 2020. In 2022, the Food & Beverage and Golf Departments transitioned to direct Club management, accompanied by the addition of several new staff roles including a Food & Beverage Director and Executive Chef. Capital improvements remain central to the Club’s long‑term success. Major renovations to the locker rooms and Golf Shop were completed in 2022, followed by the construction of the first on‑course restroom and work on an additional backup well in 2023. In October 2024, renovation began on the main clubhouse level, including an extended roofline for enhanced patio shade, a new outdoor bar and fire pit, an additional storage shed, and updates to seating, restrooms, and office areas. In the Fall of 2025, the Club initiated a major capital project to replace the irrigation mainlines serving both the front and back nines. The Club maintains six irrigation ponds supporting 4 acres of greens, 2.5 acres of tees, 22.5 acres of fairways, and 42 acres of rough. The tees and fairways consist primarily of creeping bentgrass, while greens are approximately 80% creeping bentgrass and 20% poa annua. The rough features a mix of fescue, ryegrass, and Kentucky bluegrass.
