History

In the mid 1980’s Ian Camfield had the vision and the dream of creating a country club in Stonington, CT. With a small group of Founders this goal was pursued to a successful conclusion in spite of adverse economic conditions.

An extraordinary aspect of the development of the Stonington Country Club was that all the financing that was required came from the generosity of our members.

In coordination with course designer Al Zikorus, the first nine holes and a partially completed clubhouse were opened in August 1992. Two years later in the spring of 1994 the back nine opened with five holes. The design of the back nine was enhanced by Ron Forse, a golf course architect from Pennsylvania. He refined the original plans that had been laid out approximately seven years earlier by Al Zikorus. The final four holes, which completed the back nine, opened in October 1997.

In 1999 it was apparent that our clubhouse was not adequately for our expanded membership. Once again we called upon our fellow members, contractor Wes Maxwell and architect Bill Roehl to enlarge the clubhouse. The addition was completed in June of 2001.
